COP 21, MY TAKE, two.

It has been ages since I posted here on my blog, but here is my two cents(2nd take) on the COP21 Agreement.

''It would be sad, and I dare say even catastrophic, were particular interests to prevail over the common good and lead to manipulating information in order to protect their own plans and projects.'' Pope Francis at UNEP, Nairobi prior to COP 21.

Excerpt from Guardian Online:
Loss and Damage: Page 25 of the COP 21 Agreement,
“Parties recognize the importance of averting, minimizing and addressing loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change, including extreme weather events and slow onset events, and the role of sustainable development in reducing the risk of loss and damage.”
Melissa Eddy, Berlin correspondent:
This is the first time the term “loss and damage” has been included in an international agreement, meeting a demand from smaller, island countries for acknowledgement of their suffering from the effects of climate change. Although the language stops short of mentioning liability – opposed by more heavily polluted industrialized nations – it is still considered a significant step toward recognition of the damage that results from rising global temperatures.

POPE’S RESPONSE TO COP21

Pope Francis on Sunday praised what he called an “historic” agreement reached at a United Nations climate change summit in Paris and called for a global commitment to implement it, including special attention to the poorest populations.

PRIORITISE CLIMATE CHANGE...

Hello Good people, it has been Long! Long indeed it has been! But not any longer. We have been silent and apparently politics have taken priority as it usually does, but not any longer!! Here comes a debate on LinkedIn by One, Brennan Jorgensen:

Globally, What is the Single best strategy for mitigating anthropogenic climate change?

Here are His Suggestions:

• Energy conservation/ efficiency pertains to not only reducing energy demand by residential and commercial buildings but also increasing fuel efficiency standards in the transportation sector in addition to more mass transit. Hybrid and electric vehicles can also be included in this category.

• Renewable energies include solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal and biomass/biofuels.

• The nuclear energy category includes not only uranium-based nuclear fission but also next generation nuclear technologies such as traveling wave reactors, thorium-fission and possibly hydrogen fusion.

• Planetary geoengineering refers to various methodologies including carbon capture and storage, biochar, ocean-iron fertilization, terraforming deserts with agriculture and forestry. It also includes solar radiation management (SRM) including stratospheric aerosols, cloud brightening and white roofs.

• Slowing population growth refers to increasing women’s rights and providing better access to birth control for both genders. Enacting one-child policies can also be included in this category.

***If you want to provide a ranking of the effectiveness of each category (1st, 2nd, 3rd..) rather than choosing a single best answer please feel free to post this.

CLIMATE CHANGE REVERSAL, ONE PUPIL AT A TIME

Today I read an interesting tweet that went like this...'China has got a plan for Africa, Africa we need a plan for China', interesting, huh?!! Now these Chinese people do not only have a plan for Africa, am thinking they got a plan for the world especially on the plan that concerns all of us earthlings...CLIMATE CHANGE!
For one, these Chinese were able to reclaim previously arid land back into forested area and guess what size of land.... As BIG as France! In addition, they are transforming their environment one pupil at a time. How? Every primary school child is being taken through a thorough education system which is part of the syllabus. Recently at the UNEP headquarters here in Kenya a number of their pupils flew in to receive awards for the best drawing depicting environmental conservation. Apparently, the top candidate was a Chinese young girl! If that is not enough these children have got fully trained teachers dedicated to imparting this 'hot potato' subject to their pupils. I doubt these teachers would dare go for strike given the gravity of Climate Change!
In Kenya we got a problem because we are interested more in cutting trees than in planting for the generations to come. Am not too sure if you pupils, 'the next generation' would be able to get this my heartfelt message by reading this my blog, but even if you wont be able to, I will be bringing this to your school soon. Now' I want you to demand a tree seedling and request for a point in your school compound so that you may be able to plant it and then mobilize your classmates to do the same. Or better still you can do the same at your home or a public park or forest near you. After you do the planting, the homework has got to be done daily, watering weeding and taking care of it just like mum or dad or guardian took care of you since you were a baby up to now that you are going to plant a tree. For you adults, are you sure you want me to advise you the same like the children? NO! Be good examples, and offer leadership if you love your son or daughter or little nephew or niece or little brother or sister. Let us meet at the garden to plant the one tree that would make us create the change we want to see.... Ciao!
